I just give it as a "gift" as well. This way you clear your mind of expectations of getting paid back. Gifting eliminates all of the guilt and "hard feelings" that lending money to friends and family can cause. I always make sure that I am in the position to "gift" before I make the commitment. The fact of the matter is that when people ask for money, it's usually because they're not very good at holding onto it in the first place. Gifting is good thing, it requires no commitment of paying back or dealing with awkward situations later down the road.
